Music is Education
The Chamber Orchestra of Florida is dedicated to the concept that music is essential to human well-being. Music is present in all aspects of human life, from war and religion to opera and symphonic concerts. It has been used since the beginning of civilization to assist in the remembrance and telling of epic stories. Music expresses emotions and feelings that words alone cannot. Aldous Huxley said, “Music comes nearest, after silence, to expressing the inexpressible.”
Today the most important social benefit of music may be its power to enhance one’s ability to think. There is strong evidence that indicates children who are involved in studying and listening to music, not only become better students, but gain special skills in spatial and abstract reasoning. They show more ability to solve mazes, draw geometric figures, and play chess. There is also documented evidence that young people who study music develop a higher number of brain cells than those who do not. These observations are now popularly known as the “Mozart Effect.”
The exposure of our youth to music should, therefore, not be on the periphery, but at the center of education. Further, it is important to note that these transferable skills are increased where music of high caliber is involved in this process. This points to “classical” music. History tells us that “classical” music is the foundation of most other music in society. It is the music of the great composers such as Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Copland, and Bernstein (just to name a few) that delivers lasting value to those who perform and listen.
Matinee Musicale
In addition to the “Champagne Concerts” a series of intimate and interactive chamber music mini recitals is offered in private homes. This series benefits the COOF.
